Fire alarm testing

Start with the system and the building.

Fire alarm systems vary. A domestic arrangement, a shared system in a converted building and a system in an HMO can have different requirements. Tell us what is installed, how the property is used and what record or inspection has been requested.

What to include in your request

• Property use, occupancy and any shared areas.
• The type of alarm system, if known, and any system documentation.
• Previous inspection records and any current fault indications.
• Whether you need testing, servicing or advice on the scope required.

Confirming the work

The equipment, testing methods, access, limitations and report or record must be agreed before attendance. Servicing, repairs, installations and certification are separate scopes and must only be included when specifically confirmed.

Testing is not a fire risk assessment

Testing an alarm system does not assess all fire precautions or the overall risk within a building. A fire risk assessment is a distinct service. We do not present alarm testing as a replacement for that assessment or as a guarantee of full compliance.

How often should a system be tested?

There is no single interval suitable for every alarm system and building. Follow the appropriate system documentation and responsible-person arrangements, with competent advice for the building and applicable requirements. Tell us why a test is being requested so we can discuss the appropriate scope.

Before the visit

Arrange access to the system and relevant areas. Discuss alarm activation and how occupants or monitoring arrangements should be managed. Do not disable safety systems to prepare for an inspection.
